- I'm looking for this book.
I found it on the computer, but I can't find it on the shelf.
- Where can I find this call number?
Do you have books for a 10-year-old?
Where is the children's section?
"Do you have this book?"
- I'd like to borrow these.
- How many books can I borrow?
- Do I need a library card?
- Can I borrow with my child's card?
- When is this due?
(due = 반납 기한) - What's the due date?
- How long can I keep it?
- Is there a late fee?
- I'd like to return these.
- Can I renew this?
(renew = 대출 연장) - Can I extend it for one more week?
- I think this is overdue. I'm sorry.
- Pardon? / Sorry? — 네?
- Can you show me where?
- I found it on the computer, but I can't find it on the shelf.
- When is this due?
- Can I renew this?
"I can't find it on the shelf" 한마디면 같이 찾아주러 와요.
English Summary
Part 6 of "A Penang Mom's Survival English": the library — the one I personally needed most. The search computer is the OPAC, which gives you a call number (the book's shelf location), but you often still can't find it, so ask: "I found it on the computer, but I can't find it on the shelf" (the line I use most), "Where can I find this call number?", "Where is the children's section?" Borrowing: "I'd like to borrow these. How many books can I borrow? Do I need a library card?" Most important — avoid late fees: "When is this due? What's the due date? How long can I keep it? Is there a late fee?" Returning/renewing: "I'd like to return these. Can I renew this? I think this is overdue. I'm sorry." Key words: borrow/return, due date, renew, overdue, late fee/fine, call number, shelf. And "Can you show me where?" asks the librarian to help you find it. Librarians are usually kind and helping you find books is their job — one sentence cured my library anxiety, and coming home with an armful of books with my kids is one of my favourite things.
